COLLISION: MSC NIKITA & NIRINT PRIDE – 30 AUGUST 2009

Claims & Recoveries Bureau have been appointed to represent cargo interests in relation to a collision of the these two vessels in the North Sea, in the summer of 2009.

The vessels collided at 52o04’N, 03o25’E, approximately 41 km off Hoek van Holland in The Netherlands. This caused major hull damage to the MSC Nikita, breaching the engine room, and the vessel was only able to make it back to port under tow. The collision also caused the Nirint Pride to catch fire, although this was extinguished and it was able to return to port under its own power. Large-scale damage was vitsited upon the cargo of both vessels.

Our negotiations with the vessels’ owners and P&I Clubs are ongoing in relation to this matter, and we would be interested to hear from any other party’s with a similar interest.

                                                                M/V "VARAMO" ENGINE PROBLEMS - 7 MAY 2009

Claims and Recoveries Bureau have been advised of potential claims incoming in relation to pending problems aboard the m/v “VARAMO” that may have serious implications for cargo owners with consignments onboard.

The vessel has been held up by mechanical problems in Long Beach. It has been reported "The owner has not indicated when the vessel will resume the Manzanillo-bound voyage, but on information and belief, the mechanical difficulties resulted from a broken crankshaft in the main engine, the repair of which could take up to three months,"

The Varamo arrived in Long Beach earlier this month with 444 boxes. It then developed mechanical problems and as such was unable to arrive under its own power, which meant tugs were needed to bring the Cypriot-flagged ship into port. Despite the ship being incapacitated, more containers were loaded, bringing the total to 660.
